Any thing that is used as a fashion complementary is referred to as a fashion accessory. Most of the times fashion accessories include jewelry. This jewelry is known as costume jewelry. Accessories are used to highlight the important areas of the costume and also at times to hide some flaws in a particular design.
New trends are often set in the fashion industry by the addition of accessories to the clothing line. Fashion accessories are required at times to add detail to the garment if it is too plain. Although it is felt that accessories are more of eye candy but in actuality they can serve better purposes too. For instance a matching handbag looks very attractive but it facilitates the wearers to carry their stuff around. Sun glasses are a fashion statement but they also serve to protect the eyes from the harmful rays of the sun.
Shoes come in various styles and have become a fashion statement in themselves but the basic purpose that they serve is to protect the feet in cold weather or extreme heat. Belts also which are now available in every imaginable shapes and material possible, have the task of holding the trousers to the waist and preventing them from falling down.
Accessories in some cultures are according to their religious beliefs or rituals for instance the caps of the Muslims and the Jews. The cross of the Christians which is worn as a pendant, and represents the crucifixion of Christ is another accessory.
